Summary...

While Buffy, BR, Spike, Willow and other gang members fight Dru and Wolfram-Hart in England...New Slayer Basey Granger, Giles, Xander, Anya, Tara, and Dawn hold the fort at home...

And Giles gets a chance to train his new Slayer...In the dreary details of Slaying...

BR verse note....

An alternate season 5 line in which Warren, a true genius and much nicer guy, created a perfect neural copy of Buffy at Spike's request...With a little help from the Powers That Be...

It soon became clear they had succeeded far better than they could have imagined...And that this Buffy...Who renamed herself Buffy Rebecca Summers, fearing her "cybergenius" creators couldn't keep two Buffies straight...Was the one Buffy in the universe who could offer Spike
salvation...

She also appeared in time to defeat Glory...And save Buffy and Dawn...However her brain was destroyed as a consequence of the battle...Having earned redemption, love, and the affection of
the human Summers', his new "sisters-in-law", by proving his love for his BR... Spike vowed to search for her soul, forever if necessary...

The existence of BR's soul was proven in short order courtesy of a Willow seance done at Spike's request which called BR's spirit just in time to allow her to help Buffy fight off her demon after Darla and Dru had succeeded in transforming the human Buffy using a vamped Hank Summers as their instrument of destruction...

Spike and Willow and the combined LA/Sunnydale gang...minus Angel on a Tibet excursion...got the resurrection ceremony used to restore Darla as human and saved the human-souled...double human-souled but vampire Buffy, defeating Darla and Dru in the process...

BR's spirit had had to be released, despite a depressed Buffy's offer to leave her body to her sister to allow her to rejoin Spike...Neither BR nor Spike accepted the offer...But instead Buffy secretly had Willow merge BR's memories with her own so that Warren could try to recreate BR's
artificial human brain and recall her soul back to her robot body...

Spike in the meantime as befit his redeemed status had not only gone into partnership with his buddy cybergenius Warren...As "Dr." William Walthrop...But had decided it was time to save the soul of poor lost Drusilla...Who had briefly been released in the vamp Dru by Willow during the fight with Darla and Dru...

He had company...BR was successfully restored by Warren and co, and married Spike with the gang's cautious and Buffy's enthusiastic support...

Their hunt for Dru...Who has powerful human allies...Remnants of the Wolfram-Hart forces...continues in England...With Willow who they took to Europe to protect as she has been attacked and nearly transformed by an old Rosenberg family friend, the former Sunnydale pol, now vampire, Leto...Likewise a WH ally...

Fearing that BR...Who is three times as powerful as Buffy but cannot kill human beings...Warren having been nervous after April...would be in danger from the WH humans...And learning that Spike had been captured by the enemy...Buffy and Warren have gone to join their friends in
England...

However Sunnydale is not defenseless...Owing to Buffy's temporary recent death, another human Slayer, Ms. Basey Granger, has been summoned and joined the gang...

She and Giles, now recovering from a recent heart attack...A mishap during a spell to check Buffy's and Basey's minds for possible contamination by the respective vamps who had drawn blood...Are watching the home ground with Xander, Anya, Tara, and Dawn...While waiting news from England...

And now you're up to speed...(If reading the other stories, we are just before the conclusion of "The Tie That Binds")

The Dreary Details...

A stretch limo pulled up at the Sunnydale Cold Storage Warehouse Building...

Followed by several large cars...Three packed with a rather thuggish but very well dressed crew...

The others with a few hard-faced, but somewhat attractive, well dressed women...All of whom had a curiously frightening, hungry look to them...

From the first car emerged the famed Louis Gumo, head of one of New York State's most infamous crime families...

Who, having learned a while back that he faced an enemy he could not bribe, kill, or frighten off...Cancer...Had recently decided to acquire new abilities...Courtesy a captured vampire...Who, surprised by the honor...having feared instant staking...had been quite willing to assist the famed gangster...

Sadly, Louis preferred to call no one "Sire"...And his vampiral 'dad' was no more...

However, Louis had quickly recognized the benefits of his new abilities...And decided to pass them on to many of his employees and associates...While preserving a certain minimum of human protectors...Particularly his own dear wife, Mona...

Hey...He was a family man...

Even if he'd had to deal with his troublesome punk of a son in his human days a few years back...That was business...

And as for his vampiress harem...Well, Mona understood such things...And they weren't human after all...Any more...
***
Their new abilities quickly made his gang quite a force to be reckoned with...Despite the minor limitations...

But like all vamps, Louis and his staff felt the call of the Hellmouth's energy...And that of sunny California...

And, having established contacts with the vamp community had learned of their greatest potential enemies...The Sunnydale Slayers...

Now totaling three...Out of prison, that is...

And Louis always preferred to meet enemies head on...

He was that kind of a guy...
***
In fact, he had been invited out...By his legal firm, Wolfram-Hart...The LA division of which had unfortunately been dealt a severe blow recently by those same Slayers and their friends...

And whose current head, now in England, the distinguished jurist Sir Harold Milliken, had personally requested his friend Louis' assistance in dealing with the problems created by the Slayers...

Which merely encouraged Louis to pursue the course instinct was urging on him...

Like salmon heading to the home stream, all vamps must eventually head for the Hellmouth...

***
His human agents had chosen the Cold Storage Warehouse as a fitting base...Large, isolated...Cold and dark...But with running water and electricity...

Perfect place for the boss and the special team...And a great place to bring people for "business meetings"...

Louis was looking forward to just such a meeting with the three Slayers...
***
His people began settling in...A couple were sent out to scout the town...

Sir Harold's people had provided some information as to the Slayers...But Louis, much as he respected Sir Harold...A real English gent...Had little patience for information gathering, etc...He preferred a direct approach...Go out, bust heads, vamp a few survivors...

Hey, he respected these legal types but they were caught with their pants down by three girls...

He'd go with the old reliable way, thanks...

Still, it was good to have the Slayers' home address and the place they and their little band of kiddies liked to hang out...Some place called the Magic Box...

His scouts reported no one at either place...

Well, they'd finish settling in, then grab a few locals and bust heads...

***
A little trouble later that evening...His scouts coming back found a couple of humans hanging around the warehouse area...Some guy, a Brit...And a tall, black girl...

They had orders to bring any such loitering about the place in...Untouched...Louis figured the famed Slayers might have a few of theirs around...After all...

The coming of the great Louis Gumo was sure to attract some attention...Even with precautions...

***
Giles and the young woman were brought into the lower floor area of the main warehouse to face Mr Gumo...

Both claimed to know nothing...Or each other...Just walking around...

Who did these people think they were, anyway?...The girl told them...She wasn't trespassing...Just walking home outside the gate...

Louis studied the Brit...Calling himself Mr. Giles...Hey...?
He called for the Wolfram-Hart material...Didn't the Slayers have some guy helping them named Giles?...

Yeah, there he was in the file...The Watcher...

Well, not a bad start...

But, as a gent with an eye for the ladies...Louis decided to begin with the young woman...

Who probably knew nothing but would make a nice addition to his little harem...

But the last of his scouts came back with news...A note...Posted on the warehouse grounds' gate...

By the Slayers...At least one of them anyway...

A challenge...A personal challenge...

If Mr. Gumo was willing to take on a girl...One of the Slayers was free tonight...

If he and his had the guts to come out into Sunnydale...

***
Louis raged at Giles...Ham-handed fist waving in air...That Slayer...All three, if they were around...Would be working for him before the night was out...

Louis ordered his vamps out...Time to bust a few heads...

Where to go, they asked?...Who cared...Just head out, bust heads, and get the Slayers for him...

The boys nodded, grabbed their guns, and went for their cars...Time to rock these West Coast types...

Louis turned back to his latest girl...Mr. Giles could wait a moment...

Three mighty explosions rocked the area...All three cars had blown to bits...

Giles was sure...well, he sincerely hoped...no humans had been involved but...As he had pointed out to a slightly reluctant Xander while wiring the bombs earlier...With so much of the gang away and such a powerful enemy...Heavily armed as well as vampiral...They had to take more
aggressive premptive action than usual...

Fortunately...It was not exactly Michael Corleone they'd been dealing with...

"What the hell!..." A shocked Boss Gumo looked out over the remains of his gang...Scattered across the parking lot...

Just as Basey, twisting out of his loosened grip, whipped her stake out and smashed it into his chest...

And from the office area second floor balcony overlooking the main warehouse floor, Xander, Anya, and Tara appeared and fired a volley of crossbow arrows into the remaining vamp goons and vampiresses, particularly those holding Giles...

Who broke loose and threw the contents of his pockets, two full vials of holy water, into the faces of those vamps nearest him...

Basey made short work of those shocked few still standing...Kindly dealing with the females herself, to spare Giles any discomfort...Leaving the sole three human males under her and Giles' now heavily armed watch...And Louis' human wife, Mona...

Who had slipped upstairs to the office area where she ran into a hallway-blocking Xander, backed by Anya, and demonstrating the talents Louis had loved her for, pulled a knife and began slashing at him...

Until a furious Anya slammed a folding chair into her side and leaving a wounded Xander to Tara who had come up in support...Chased Ms. Gumo down the hall to an open balcony...

Ms. Gumo slashed at Anya, hopped on the balcony rail...And slipped...Anya reflexively grabbing her arm...

And holding her, two stories up...

Until, remembering she was rather annoyed with the lady...

With a few minutes' sweeping, the remains of the vaunted Gumo crime family, vampiral, were on their way to a burial at sea, courtesy of Sunnydale's sewer system...

And the three human males were on their way to the Sunnydale police department...
***
Tara was a little...Uncomfortable...With Anya's action...

"You really shouldn't have let go, Anya..."

Giles was more concerned with finding the lady's body...After all only two stories...

On reflection, Anya was willing to admit that she had made a faux pas...But after all, she was only...recently restored...human...And a loving fiancee...Whose future husband had been hurt...

Should she turn herself in?...For a lengthy prison term...Like in the movies?...she asked Giles...

Would Xander still be able to marry her first?...And do the conjugal visits thing?...

No...Giles didn't think incarceration was necessary...It seemed Ms. Gumo had unfortunately survived the fall...And fled...

Tara felt better...
***
Dawn was actually the heroine of the hour...

The new researcher had been diligently monitoring Willow's standard net sources for any possible new threats...Having been assigned that task as well as the duty of keeping the extended gangs, LA and Sunnydale, each now divided and working in two continents...In as close coordination as possible...

Duties entrusted to her by her sisters the Buffies...Anne and Rebecca...And which she was determined to live up to as befitting a daughter of Joyce...And Hank, she thought, loyally...Summers...

She had spotted the traffic on Gumo's and his family's move West...A long trail of comments and nervous warnings...

Even among West Coast vamps Louis' arrival had not been cause for jubilation...

She even had found the location of the warehouse Louis' agents had purchased...

So that thanks to her, Giles and Basey and the remaining gang had been able to prepare for the Gumos' arrival...

And deal with what might have been a serious threat...In classic style...

Even Buffy Rebecca would be impressed...

***

Basey had not been pleased to see Giles leaving the hospital early to coordinate the action...But...

She could see the prospect of such quick preventative action was like a tonic in its effect on him...

And the consequences of delay were serious enough to take a risk...

So long as he never left her sight...

***

Xander, thank goodness, had not been badly hurt...

So it was a jubilant crew that gathered in his hospital room...

The new Slayer, who had earned her laurels and then some...

And the old gang...strutting their stuff in the absence of their Buffies...

Plus of course their beaming new researcher...Who happily shared her glory with Basey's young brother, Leroy...Who had proudly assisted his new sister in her work...

And more good news was to follow...
***
Ms. Amelia Walthrop-Hunt, Spike's grandniece, plus or minus several greats, member of the Council of Watchers and the gang's link to the team in England, reached them at the hospital from England...

Expecting to find them with Mr. Giles, still on the mend from his recent heart attack...

To report a smashing victory...Human Drusilla was at peace, after being of considerable aid...

Wolfram-Hart, Europe, allied to Dru, had tried and failed to defeat the Walthrops and Buffy...

Spike's chip had been disabled but they believed it could be repaired and so far he was under BR's watchful care...He'd gotten a little burned in the fight but nothing serious...

Warren was also slightly hurt...But would be fine, under Buffy's equally watchful care...

Willow was in excellent shape...And had played a vital role in the victory...

Dru's poor human minions, mostly young women...were free and being cared for...

Also, it seemed a traitor on the Council had been in WH employ...He was now exposed and would face the Council's justice...

Sure to be swift and severe...
***
Amelia told them that the Buffies would call as soon as Spike and Warren were settled...But Willow, Angel, and Wesley were here and wanted to speak to them...

The Sunnydale gang had news for them...

Just a few dreary details of their own to add...Giles told her...

***
The Dreary Details...Part II

In calls home the next day, the Buffies, Anne and Rebecca...were suitably impressed by the news of the gang's quick action in dealing with the new threat...

Though both were worried to hear that Giles had left his hospital bed early to deal with the situation...

But Ms. Granger assured them that Giles was much better...Considerably happier to be out and about...And to be part of a major victory over the dark powers...

She'd make him rest, they had her word on it...

***
Giles arranged for a conference call to England after Buffy and Buffy Rebecca reported their respective charges safely attended to...

Warren in hospital...Spike awaiting the arrival of a skilled neurosurgeon...

There were other matters Giles wanted to settle with members of the England group and the Council as well...

Ms. Granger needed a Watcher...After all, there were now three Slayers active...Who each deserved the maximum care and support a dedicated Watcher could provide...Even if the plans he had for "Dr." Walthrop worked out and the Council approved a vampire husband as Watcher
for Buffy Rebecca...

Besides, there were personal issues...Which his friends were well aware of and the Council...Did not need to be informed of...That would make it difficult for him to continue to cover Ms. Granger as well as Buffy Anne...

Things were moving fast between our Watcher and new Slayer the Buffies noted...If Giles were at the point of mentioning "personal issues"... Even if only before the Council members joined the conversation...

But at least he wasn't showing signs of running for the first plane to England as they had feared...

***
Giles had a simple solution in mind...

There were two excellent candidates for Watcher for Ms. Granger...If either would consider the post...

Wesley...A close friend...Who had more than earned the right to return to the Council as fully reinstated Watcher...Who knew Sunnydale and the Hellmouth and had learned...the hard way...how to deal with independent-minded Slayers...And was an excellent fighter in his own right...

But, if he preferred his current work with Angel...Where he was performing nobly and doing a vital job...

Amelia, Ms. Walthrop-Hunt...Who likewise was a friend...Had proven her talent and ability in the fight with Dru and Wolfram-Hart...And could provide a new slant and insight to the group...Besides providing Spike with extra emotional support...Family, no less...to make good in his new life...

Not only were they both excellent candidates, Giles insisted to the Council members who had joined the conversation...They were the only possible choices...This was no time to fool with sending an untrained, inexperienced candidate...Evil was in retreat...But sure to regroup and fight on...

Much to his surprise they were in complete agreement...Even Quentin Travers, head of the Council, had seen the light...And the writing on the wall...

Wesley would be welcome...If he chose to take the position...But if not, they could only hope that Ms. Walthrop-Hunt would be willing to relocate...

Wesley, though admittedly tempted, preferred to stay on with Angel and Cordy...Much to his boss' delighted relief...

Ms. Walthrop-Hunt, impressed by what she had seen of the Sunnydalers...was pleased to accept...And hoped she and Ms. Granger would have a long and successful working relationship...

***

Hmmn...Basey thought...Ms. Walthrop-Hunt...

She'd been assured by Giles that Amelia was no Ms. Post, who had been her Observer years ago during her preSlayer days...And had betrayed her to the local vampire prince in her home state of Indiana when she'd suspiciously refused to help her acquire powerful artifacts...

But that wasn't the problem...Though naturally she couldn't help being nervous...The problem was...

Amelia...British, late 30s, intelligent, classy, attractive in an Emma Thompsonish way, according to Willow and the Buffies...

Member of the Council of Watchers...Beloved relative of the Walthrops...A dear new friend to all the gang members who'd met her...

Divorced...

Soon to be in Sunnydale...Working closely with Giles...Her Giles...
In every way a far more suitable companion for Rupert...
***

Tara...Who knew what it meant to be an outsider with the gang...Was sympathetic as they discussed the matter...At dinner in private that evening...While working on their college homework...

She couldn't help feeling Basey was rushing things with Giles a little...But then, Ms. Granger was clearly not someone who wasted time once she found something or someone she wanted...

And Giles clearly, if hesitantly, returned the interest...

"Should I speak to him...Before she comes?..." Basey asked her...

Speak to him?...

"Get a commitment, that sort of thing...Tell him flat out... æGiles, I want us to be together'..."

Well...Giles was so reserved...Not that Tara didn't admire Ms. Granger's forthright attitude...

Hmmn...Maybe the reserved approach was best, Basey considered...Yet, if she didn't stake her claim...

Look at poor Buffy and that Riley...

Tara reflected... 'Stake her claim?'...Well...

Maybe she should try...Letting him know her concerns...But gently...

He was anxious to have her proper training begin...After all the time she'd lost while on the run, in hiding...Maybe while they'd be working together...She could see how he...

She was right...Basey told her...Show a little reserve but make it clear where she stood...Lay a foundation and set the posts...While they trained together... The whole building would be in place by the time her new Watcher arrived...

Ummn...Yeah...

Basey thanked her friend...No wonder the gang placed such value in her counsel and judgment...

Really?...Tara thought...

***
Xander was ready to leave the hospital by the next day, and they all went over to escort him home...

He was quite pleased if shocked to find himself the adored center of attention for Anya, Dawn, Basey, and Tara...

All of whom had decided it was time Mr. Harris received his proper hero's due...

Giles provided a degree of rescue...Interrupting the accolades to bring him up to date...As he had missed yesterday's conference call...

So Ms. Walthrop-Hunt...Spike's great-great-great...etc grandniece was coming to join them...

Intriguing...

But nice for Giles...

Oh...Basey asked him...As casually as possible....Nice?...

Well...Brits and all...Giles'd finally have someone who under...

Something about Basey's look made Xander change the subject...

***
Giles was pleased to hear that Basey was anxious to begin her new training regimen...

If he was sure he was up to it, she'd love to have a routine established before the new Watcher took over...

Xander couldn't help wishing he was up to "puffy Xander" work...This was likely to be interesting training...

Anya however had been more than happy to offer herself as replacement...Which Giles had been equally happy to accept...

Oh...Great...Glad to have you...Basey noted to her...

Yeah...Great...

She didn't know which was worse...The upcoming fact of Anya's being there or the obvious relief Giles felt at having someone else planning to be around...

***

Though Mona Gumo had never interfered in her husband Louis' affairs...Business or personal...

She had taken his death...well, his ending...rather personally...

Especially after being dropped two stories from an office balcony onto a corrugated tin-roofed shed...

However with no help at hand...And his interests in New York being grabbed up by rivals almost immediately...There was little she could do to avenge him...In the traditional Gumo manner...

Still, there was always the personal touch...Not his way perhaps, but for her...Infinitely more satisfying...

If she could get to the young black woman and the Brit who'd killed her Louie...Not to mention the one who'd dropped her...

Her skills with knife and gun would do the rest...

Fortunately she had held on to the Wolfram-Hart file on the Slayers...

***

The Dreary Details...Part III

The next day after seeing Dawn and Leroy off to school and attending her one class for the day, Basey headed over to the Magic Shop...

Giles was happily grousing to Anya about "changes" she had made in his absence...She'd moved the cerifan herbs to the shelf for aphrodisiacs... They were for curing gas not enhancing romance...And the Gorgan's mirrors were not the real thing...They were a parlor trick, showing everyone in a Medusa-like face...They belonged with the joke items...And was she absolutely sure she hadn't resorted his locked cabinet of the more dangerous spells?...He was sure some were out of order...

Clearly he was happy to be back...Which Anya recognized...Though she was glad to see Basey come in to draw his attention elsewhere...And because it meant she could go to bring Xander, still recovering for a day or two at home, over to man the register while she donned the "puffy Anya" suit...

***

They were alone...Just Basey and Giles...No customers at present...

Was he glad to be back?...Basey asked...

Oh, well...So many things to be done...But yes, it was preferable to a hospital bed...

Ah...Oh...Was he taking it easy?...He wasn't overdoing it?...

Yes, yes...Anya wasn't letting him overdo...In fact it was getting a little...

Good, good...Long as he wasn't overdoing it...Ummn...She was really looking forward to starting her formal training...Especially at the hands of Buffy Summers' trainer...

Well...Buffy never really needed much help in that regard...As clearly she did not, judging by the other night's performance...

Oh, no...Not at all...She needed him...Ummn...She needed the training badly...She was sure...

Well, of course learning more about the formalities of Slaying and some of the techniques could never hurt...

Never, she agreed...She smiled at him...

What beautiful eyes he had...And his whole manner...So gentle, yet so solid...Truly masculine...Not that nonsense on TV...Or like those idiots at UCal-Sunnydale...

As she had told Buffy earlier...Good ones like Rupert don't fall out of trees every day...And she intended to catch this one...

***
Mrs. Gumo had found a Sunnydale pawn shop where the owner was only too happy to sell her a high-powered rifle, a pistol, and, supposedly illegal, dumdums...

God bless America, land of the free...And the assault rifle...

Hey, a lady alone needs some protection...
***

So long as they had some time...Before Anya returned with Xander...Giles told Basey...Why not start with the essential skill...

Research...

Research...Echoed Basey...Absolutely...One could never do enough research...Digging through books and computer files, side-by-side...Sharing their pooled efforts...Together...

She was really into research...

***

"What do you think?..." Anya asked Xander as they drove toward the shop...

"Basey...And Giles?..." Xander was developing quite a sense of where Anya's thoughts led...

Befitting a loving fiancee and soon to be husband...Anya was pleased to see she did not have to fill in the blanks...They were annoying, especially for newly restored human types...

"Should we...Take our time?..." Anya wondered to him...

Xander pondered...He liked Ms. Granger...Having worked closely with her recently during Willow's worst period of thrall...And Giles definitely needed someone to keep him in order...

Of course, she was a year younger than their Buffy...Than both Buffies if he allowed BR as spiritually and mentally Buffy's age...Rather than her physical age of three months...

But heck, BR had just married Spike, a fellow over 100...And Buffy Anne had had Angel for a feller...Likewise a plus-centarian...

Why not?...If they were happy...And it would ensure that Giles stayed around in case he got any more crazy ideas about being unnecessary once BR and Buffy returned...

Yeah...

"You know, honey...I think I need some aspirin...And maybe some coffee and breakfast...Before we get over to Giles'...If that's ok with you..."

It was fine with Anya...
***

Basey had been not been stretching the truth...Much...About her liking for research...

She loved history...And was throughly enjoying their friend, Professor Drages', aka Byzantine Emperor Constantine XXX, Commander of the Knights of Byzantium, series of Roman and Byzantine lectures at UCal-Sunnydale...

So her enthusiasm for much of what Giles went over was not feigned...

There was just...So much of it...

Giles, fortunately, despite his enthusiasm, had long experience with Buffy and her earnest attempts to show interest in the booky aspects of Slaying...

At that he was pleased to see Ms. Granger hold out so long with relatively genuine interest...

Only Willow had ever lasted longer without escaping to the ladies room...Or receiving an urgent summons home...Or remembering some forgotten vital project...

So he was able to recognize the need of a brief halt before Ms. Granger reached the squirm point...

Coffee?...

Please...

Unless he was having tea...She loved tea...

Frankly, he hated the stuff...

Oh...Well, coffee's fine...

But she did love tea...Didn't want him to think she was trying to butter up the Watcher...

***
"Giles, how did you get into this business?..." Basey asked him as they relaxed...

Well...he pondered...

"A very long story..." he told her...

"Please..."

He gave her the outline...Holding back some things...Nothing essential, but...

He rather liked Ms. Granger and preferred not to alarm her unduly with tales of his darker youth...

Considering what she had been through in the past few years...

There was plenty of time to discuss his darker days in detail later...Once she was assured of his present...

He found himself rather wanting to assure her of his present...

***
"Buffy has been so lucky to have you, Rupert..." Basey told him as he finished his tale...

Well, Ms. Summers would have succeeded with any capable Watcher...Or even on her own...

"Not without her second father..." Basey said firmly...

Giles looked a bit sheepish...Well...

"That's how she feels...And Buffy Rebecca..."

Well...
***

Mona Gumo headed into downtown Sunnydale...Disguised with a wig, glasses, and new dress...Her guns carefully tucked away in a leather satchel, her favorite knife at ready, under her sleeve...

She hoped to use the knife...Sentimental reasons, you understand...

But in a pinch...The guns would have to do...

***
But how about Basey...Ms. Granger...

Did she and her brother like Sunnydale?...Was the adjustment going well?...

She grinned...After four years on the road, in hiding...Heaven, she assured him...

And to be with Buf and Dawn...With BR close by...And the gang...

She couldn't imagine a better situation...Or a safer one for a Slayer...

And was she happy with the way things worked out with college?...Had the Council's help met her needs?...

Couldn't be better...

She only hoped she could keep her grades up and deserve what they'd given her...

Ridiculous...Giles said with emphasis...

The Council could never match a fraction of what she...And every Slayer...Had done for humanity...

It was for them to ask if they had deserved what she had given them...And all of us...

Wow...

Ummn...Well, there was one thing she was missing...

***
So...Mona thought, standing outside the shop...This is it?...This dump?..The "Magic Box"...

This is where those bastards who croaked Louis came from?...

Geesch...

Well, he must have been slipping...Probably that weird therapy he took for his cancer...

Made him a little loose...All that sleeping during the day...

She went in...
***

The Dreary Details...Part IV

Mona Gumo, recent human widow of gangster/vampire Louis, stood in the Magic Box's center room, looking quietly around...Just a semi-interested shopper, passing through a curious little place while cruising town...

She recognized the fellow rising to assist her...The Brit...And the black girl with him...The one who'd killed Louis...One of those "Slayers"...

Guess she had come to the right place after all...

She thanked Giles pleasantly...No need for him to disturb himself...She was just looking around...

She'd call out if she needed anything...

***
Basey decided to redirect the conversation...While the new customer was within earshot...

Was he pleased with how things were working out for him these days?...Did he have plans for the store?...For the future?...

Well...Naturally he had his hopes...Rather dull ones, he was afraid...That the store would do well...Perhaps allowing him to gradually focus on the more serious aspects rather than the necessary jokes and tricks that brought in business...

Though he was not against the more light-hearted side of the magical, he quickly put in...It was just...So many these days...

She understood...Would he ever consider writing a history of the magic arts?...She was sure he could come up with some fascinating material...And she...Would love to assist in such a project...

Well, actually it was a dream of his to produce something useful in the field...With all the things the Sunnydalers and Angel's team had run across...

But, he added...He did have one hope...That was perhaps not so dull as the more personal ones...

One which recent events were helping to make possible...Thanks to the gang, Buffy Rebecca...And now, her own arrival...

Oh?...

He smiled...That he would live to see a Slayer or two...or three...retire...Intact...

She grinned and patted his hand...Well...With Rupert Giles around...

***
"So...perhaps we should go over basic recognition...Differentiation of demon and vampire demon sensation?..." he asked her...

Absolutely...

She'd hate to try staking some demon whose death required metal in the middle of some fast and furious battle...She'd look ridiculous...

As Buffy had...Giles confided, smiling...

The lady customer seemed quite content to continue poking over the items in the far room...

No, she was fine, thanks...

Just needed to decide if she could chance the knife, that's all...

***
Basey began reviewing the classic distinctive signs of a non vampiral demon...Minus the usual exceptions of course...And with some supplemental notes by Giles...And a curious sketch tucked in...

She looked at him...He grinned a little nervously...

"Is that...You?..."

He nodded...Willow's sketch from her notes on feral demons and his modeling...A little keepsake from his time as a demon...

She grinned...A sense of humor, too...

"You made a fine demon, Rupert...As you do in all things..."

Well...
***

Mona maneuvered back into the main shop and noting the lovebirds
seemed...Occupied...Managed to lock the front door unnoticed...

A little privacy...

Nice couple, she thought...Girl's a little young for him, but hey...

And as for the other thing...Hey...She and Louie had had no prejudices...

They'd loved Spike Lee's movies...

***

Ms. Gumo decided it was time to announce her presence...

Much as she'd like to do it all by knife...Having seen the girl in operation the night before, she had decided the gun was an unfortunate necessity...

***

Anya was surprised to find the front door of the shop locked...

Giles was barring customers from giving them their money?...

Romance was all well and good but...

She was even more surprised to see through the door a woman somewhat like the lady she'd dropped from a balcony the other night pulling a large rifle out of her satchel...

Hmmn...

Much as she, like Buffy Rebecca, hated to risk damaging Giles' property...

She'd of preferred to let Xander...But he was moving the car...

Mona whirled the rifle up at Basey and Giles just as Anya smashed the glass of the door...

Alerting them just in time...

Basey flipped the table up in front of them as Mona fired...

While Giles quite skillfully slipped to the right and tossed a light chair at the distraught widow...

Who, recovering nicely, switched to her pistol and fired off a quick round...But was forced to turn her attention to Anya who had entered just behind her...

Basey, slightly grazed by the last round of bullets, managed to leap over to just in front of Mona who was in the process of turning to deal with Anya...

As so often happens the pistol turned out to be an unsuitable close-quarters weapon, Anya knocking it back...And Mona switched again...To her favorite tool...Slashing Anya in the arm...

Giles had reached Basey who was staggering upright...And made use of his favorite weapon...Research...

Research book, that is...Whanging Mona with one of his heaviest...

And, as she staggered, but turned to face him...Demonstrating one of his hidden talents...From his darker past...

Knife-fighting...

Well, she had the knife...He had a shard of glass from the broken door...

Xander, arriving to see Giles slip through Mona's guard, force the knife from her hand, and pin her against the wall, glass shard at the throat, was impressed...

Even as he hurried to help Anya tie up her slashed arm and help Basey to a chair...

Sunnydale Hospital was seeing a lot of them these days he reflected...

Too bad good old Benedictus, Glory's counterpart brother, was back in Greece...He could probably have gotten them a discount...

Dawn was rather annoyed to see what had happened in her absence...She was, after all, responsible for them...

Still, as long as Anya and Basey'd be alright...

And it was nice to fill in the final piece of her first fully involved gang activity...

Ms. Gumo's name could now be scratched out of her list of potential dangers...

The head that wears a researcher's crown does not rest easily she sighed...

Giles sat with Basey at her bed...Fortunately she and Anya had managed the same room...Well, courtesy some manipulation on his and Xander's part...And should only require a night's observation...

Xander noticed he was holding Basey's hand...In public...Well, in semi-private room...But...

Progress...

Basey grinned at Giles...

"So...We can get back to my lessons, tomorrow, right?...the dreary details of Slaying?..."

"Indeed...If you don't find them too tiresome, my dear..." he smiled at her...

"I'll survive...If you'll be around..."

Well...
